Survival 1 - 6 day class

Student Review of the Survival 1 Class

Recently I attended a MNSI's "Survival Skills" class in South Eastern Ohio.  I had always talked about taking a survival class, but had never found a class that appeared to have exactly what I was looking for and was taught on a level that I could really get something out of. I have read a few survival books as well as countless articles in my life.

I would consider myself to be a pretty good outdoorsman. growing up in Pennsylvania in a hunting family and have always enjoyed setting up a tent camp and hunting or backpacking deep in the mountains of Northern Pennsylvania as well as the swamps of Georgia and all over the west.

One day I came across an ad for survival classes at Midwest Native Skills in the back of a hunting magazine. I did some research on the company and decided to call and inquire. I knew right then after speaking with Tom that this was the class I was looking for.

I could tell instantly that this guy was for real. I took the class and was blown away by the knowledge and professionalism of not only Tom but both of his instructors. I really can't say enough about all of these 3 men. Each has an unbelievable amount of knowledge about darn near anything you can think of .

The entire class we were learning something . Whether it was learning something that I had never knew before or re-in forcing and improving on basic skills. Whether you
are 14 or 40 these guys taught things that everyone should know. Skills that 4 generations ago all of our families knew and now are fast becoming extinct like a VCR or an 8 track.

All I can say is that if you spend anytime off the sidewalk you should take this class. The whole point of the class is to learn basic skills so when if you find yourself in an emergency situation you can know how to survive.

This class will provide you with life saving information more important than
any amount of money spent at Cabell's or REI. The thing I felt most impressed by was that these guys were not afraid to say "you know I have heard that but I never tried it, so I really cant say". If they have not personally done something they don't teach it. That is something that is very hard form some experts to do.

I firmly believe everything we learned had been tried and tested personally by them, not from
something they read or someone they knew. And that's what counts when your in the outdoors. From Star Navigation to Astrology, setting traps to finding water, to learning what plants are edible or have medicinal purposes, or starting fire with just 2 pieces of wood. My skill level and confidence went up tremendously in just 48 hours.

The Class was well worth the time and money.

Thanks again for all you taught me I look forward to learning more in
future classes.

And one last comment to Tom, Glen, and Eric... Daniel Boone and Simon Kenton would be proud.

Sincerely,
Travis Thoman

Weekend Survival Class - 21/2 Day Class

Student Review of the Weekend Survival Class:

I recently attended Midwest Native Skills Institute's, Week-End Basics Survival Class. I can honestly say it was one of the most enjoyable learning experiences of my life. I am a long serving member of the Canadian Armed Forces, and have received extensive bushcraft and survival training.

This school has further enhanced my knowledge with skills such as primitive fire starting and natural cordage. The instructors are top notch! They speak from experience and present the subject matter in a clear and easy to understand manner. Our instructor was friendly and easily approachable. Lots of time is spent on actually practicing the skills so that when the student leaves, he is proficient with what he has learned. The course was very well organized and ran very smoothly.

I highly recommend this school to anyone like myself, who has an interest in the wilderness and survival skills. You don't need any previous experience, just a desire to learn. I will definitely be back for more classes in the future. My thanks to Tom and his staff.

Another Student Review of the Weekend Survival Class:

I attended the Weekend Survival Class to learn some skills that I thought I might need in the future since I am an avid outdoorsmen. Mainly, I wanted to learn how to "rub two sticks together" to make FIRE. I learned that skill and more!  Tom taught us useful knots for tying rope in such a way that I can still remember how to tie them now. . Tom taught how to make  some pretty effective shelters also . I came away with very useful knowledge. I came to this class with an open mind and it was well worth every penny I spent! I well surely attend more classes with Tom.

One comment to future students... I brought a lot of extra fire make "crap" to the class that i did not need.  You'll learn it all (and more) during the class.

Thank you Tom!

Another Student Review of the Weekend Survival Class:

Like many others, I had been entertained (first) by Survivorman, (then later) by Dual Survival, Man/Woman/Wild, and Man vs Wild. In the last month it had triggered a question in my head... If I were on a day hike and got lost or a cross-country roadtrip and broke down, what skills did I have that I could fall back on to help my situation out? When I realized that I had very little in the way of an answer, I decided that I needed to get a little training.

After seeing the website for Survivalschool.com, I researched it. It looked very reputable, interesting, and fun. I have just recently returned from attending the Survival 1 Weekend course.

This is a fast paced class. Their desire with this course is to get as much information and hands-on practice from their week-long Survival 1 class into a weekend for those without a week to devote. We covered and practiced a basic set of knots, camping/survival knives and sharpening methods, a basic and reliable fire lay, fire bow manufacture and use, a couple of different kinds of shelters, edible plant identification, and a basic snare. Additional discussions and presentations included locating and making safe drinking water, a figure four deadfall, and survival kits. They made sure that the skills we practiced that we could do it ourselves twice before we moved on to the next topic. (PS and the food was really good)

The course was FUN, practical, and informative. My only wish was that I had the time to attend the week-long Survival 1 class. If you have the time I would urge that class. However for those of us that can't spare a week, this class imparts important basic skills that would help anyone worried about being placed in a survival situation with the hands-on practice to know you can do the techniques yourself, if needed.

Bee Keeping

Student Review of the Bee Keeping Class

I captured my first swarm today!  It was in a rose bush right in front of where I work.  I cut the branch and just placed in an empty super.  I covered that with a super filled with frames along with a cover.  That makes 3 hives!

Thanks again for the great head start.
