21st Century technology makes a water filtration plant the size of a "fat" marking pen (only 7 inches tall) It uses two 3 volt batteries and a teaspoon of common rock salt to purify over 50 gallons of water. After that, add another teaspoon of rock salt and keep purifying water! The batteries will purify 200 gallons of water before needing to be replaced.

Military tested and approved

The MSR "MIOX" (stands for mixed oxidants) Purifier occupies only ¹/₇^th the space required by a typical portable water treatment filter and is ¼ the weight. The sleek and compact design is an attractive feature for backpackers or travelers trying to minimize packing volume and weight. In addition, the device can be used away from the water source, at the consumer's convenience, and requires less than a minute to generate the disinfectant. The disinfectant solution does not leave an aftertaste at standard doses, unlike chlorine or iodine tablets.

How it Works
The device operates by converting a brine solution to a mixed-oxidant solution via electrolysis. Each purifier utilizes two 3V lithium camera batteries, any type of salt and a tiny electrolytic cell. Rock salt and batteries are included. The purifier will treat approximately 50 liters (12 gallons) of water on one teaspoon of salt and 200 liters (50 gallons) of water on one set of batteries. The purifier can be used over and over, making water treatment an inexpensive procedure after the initial purchase. An important feature of using simple salt as the disinfectant source is that salt has an infinite shelf life, so the purifier will still function even if stored without use for a long period of time. 

The ½ teaspoon of mixed-oxidant solution generated by the purifier is poured into a canteen or water bottle and allowed to sit for 30 minutes.  The disinfectant will inactivate a number of common pathogens, including E. coli, Giardia, and Cryptosporidium. The purifier also comes with a purity indicator strip, which guarantees that the water is safe to drink after the appropriate waiting period. The purifier has passed the EPA Purifier Protocol and Standard, achieving more than 10 times the level of disinfect ion than required for normal waters.
