is needed to make fire by "hitting 2 rocks
together". Although rare, this fine-grained Pyrite is suitable
for practicing this difficult fire-making
technique.
Have you heard
about starting a fire by hitting 2 rocks together?
The rocks that are needed to create fire this way
are from the Pyrite family, commonly known as
"fool's gold". It is essential that the Pyrite be
fine grained and not the large crystalline type
that is commonly found in rock shops or Natural
History Museums. Striking these fine grained
Pyrites with Flint or against each other (2 Pyrite
rocks) will produce sparks, though they are cooler
than sparks produced by a flint and steel.
Pyrrhotite, on the other hand is a close
relative to the pyritres and is often associated
with
pyrite, chalcopyrite (copper ore) and
pentlandite (nickel ore). It is
found in surface veins all over the world and
therefore a more practical rock to obtain to
make fires with.
We
have secured a limited quantity of the fine
grained pyrite from ore mines in Canada which are
suitable for experimenting with this technique.
