This is the magnesium and flint fire starter used
by the military (Mil Spec # 4240-01-160-5618).
It is a block of
solid magnesium with an imbedded "flint" striker
bar in the side.
When there is
good dry tinder available simply use your knife
or any metal scraper (like part of a hacksaw
blade) to strike on the bar to produce a shower
of hot sparks. If you have damp tinder or
are attempting to start a fire in the rain
scrape the magnesium bar to produce a small pile
of magnesium shavings and direct a spark into
that pile. The magnesium will ignite
immediately and burn extremely hot to dry out
your tinder |
