Chaga Tinder Fungus is one
of the best natural tinders available and one of
the few that can be used without charring. It is
the preferred tinder used with the Fire Piston and
Pyrites
Chaga is the
common name for a tinder fungus that can be found
growing on injured areas of the white birch tree.
Not only is it a premium tinder for use in Fire
Pistons and with spark-based fires (including
Pyrite on Pyrite), Chaga can also be made into a
delicious caffeine-free coffee substitute
beverage.
Fire
Pistons - break off a small piece of the
tinder fungus and pack it into the end of the Fire
Piston plunger.
Spark-based Fires - To ensure this
tinder fungus can catch a spark directly, it needs
to be finely ground to a powder. The finer the
powder, the easier it will be to catch a spark.
Fire Match or Coal Extender - In
order to move a fire from one location to another,
this tinder fungus can be used as the medium to
hold and transport hot coals. Simply place a hot
coal on the tinder fungus. The coal will quickly
cause the tinder fungus to begin smoldering. It
will continue smoldering for a long time.
Coffee
Substitute - To make a delicious
non-caffeinated coffee substitute beverage, simply
steep a small quantity of the tinder fungus in
boiled water for 10 minutes. Sweeteners (honey or
sugar) may be added but most find it not
necessary.
